Chair of Materials Science and Testing
Construction without building materials is inconceivable. The Chair of Materials Science and Testing is concerned with teaching and research in topics and questions regarding construction materials.
Typical groups of materials in civil engineering are metals (e.g. steel), minerals (e.g. concrete) and organic materials (wood and polymers). Since the properties of the materials in each group are very different they are assigned different tasks in structures, e.g. a load-bearing or protective / sealing function. All three groups are considered at the Chair of Materials Science and Testing. New materials are developed for special applications and the properties of the materials are optimized for the requirements in question. Rules for materials are formulated with which the material behaviour for a particular load or exposition is predicted. Modern testing equipment - sometimes specially developed at the Chair of Materials Science and Testing - is used.
